David Mamet's Faustus is a modern retelling of the classic legend where a renowned 20th-century philosopher and scientist makes a desperate pact with a mysterious magician, Magus, to wager his family's life on the validity of his scientific discoveries. Instead of trading his soul for knowledge like in traditional versions, Mamet's Faustus risks his loved ones to prove the ultimate truth of his mathematical equation for periodicity. The play explores the clash between intellectual pride, the love for his family, and the potential for both profound truth and devastating ruin.
